The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build.

If you are attempting to load a custom IPSW into iTunes, you may receive this error message.  It means that your computer is contacting Apple and verifying the IPSW, and of course Apple is denying it because it is not the original.  The fix is simple see below for Mac and Windows instructions:

Mac Instructions:

  1. Open Terminal (Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal)
  2. Type in: sudo nano /etc/hosts
  3. Type in your password and press the return key.
  4. Your hosts file should load.
  5. Put a "#" in front of any entry with gs.apple.com
  6. Control + then press Enter. (This saves the file)
  7. Close Terminal
  8. Start iTunes.

For Windows users:

  1. Close iTunes.
  2. Press Start button.
  3. Navigate to Applications > Accessories.
  4. Right click on Notepad and select "Run as Administrator".
  5. Once notepad opens, select File > Open
  6. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc
  7. Select the hosts file. (If no files are shown, change the filter to "All Files")
  8. Add a "#" in front of any entry with gs.apple.com
  9. Save the file.
  10. Exit Notepad.
  11. Start iTunes and try again.
